On Saturday September 10, 2005, members of the Worshipful Company of Glovers of London and the British Glove Association (BGA) will visit the Museum of Costume in Bath which houses one of Britain’s most treasured collections of historic gloves.
This will be a unique opportunity for Liverymen and members of the BGA to learn about the history of these gloves (currently on loan to the Museum by the Company), understand the skills of the restorer and the preserver and view the gloves themselves. Many of these gloves were made for Kings and Queens, clerics and the Court, between the 16th and the 20th Centuries.
There was a time when gloves were far more than simple accessories but were essential to any well dressed man or woman’s everyday attire. Many were made as part of an overall costume design.
