Hungarian Leather and Shoe Industry Association chairman Arpad Varszegi reports that sales by the country’s leather and shoe industry fell by 1% to HUF66.5 billion (US$221 million) in 2000.
Domestic sales reached HUF22.67billion (US$75.3 million), down 3.5%, while exports increased slightly to HUF43.82billion (US$145.5 million). Output grew in the shoe, glove and leathergoods sectors but fell sharply in tanning.
Sales of shoes, gloves and leathergoods make up 85% of the exports.
