She added that the sector plans to improve the quality of higher-priced goods to increase their competitiveness, and improve product design and marketing. Leather and footwear producers should increase raw materials imports if domestic producers failed to meet their materials demands, said Tong.
Lefaso has asked the Finance Ministry to reduce import tariffs on raw materials from 3% to 0%.  It has also recommended that the government adopt policies to attract foreign investment in the leather tanning sector by building industrial zones for leather and footwear producers.
