The market leader for over 150 years
The UK Leather & Hide Trades' Benevolent Institution (LHTBI) celebrated their 150th anniversary with a reception and lunch at the Leathersellers' hall in London on May 27. Approximately £2000 (US$2900) was raised during the event to support the 82 LHTBI recipients representing former leather and leather product workers. The key address was given by Jill Williams, financial director, Pittards who is the outgoing president. Williams was elected in 2009 as the first female preseident in the institute's 150 years.
Malcolm Proops, director, Walter Reginald Group, was elected as the new president during the LHTBI AGM which took place prior the lunch.
The LHTBI was established in 1860 following a meeting held in a coffee shop on Ludgate Hill, London. The first president was J S Deed and first payment that was made was for £18.14 (US$26.5) was distributed to the needy from the leather and leather products industries who had fallen on hard times.
In 2009 the LHTBI distrbuted funds worth £70,000 (US$102,000).
