Clariant’s Leather Business have launched a new retanning agent for producing innovative automotive leathers with excellent tanning properties. Leather automotive interiors have become a worldwide trend, thus creating increasing demands and new challenges for the retanning of chrome-free leathers, in order to meet the required high standards in terms of physical and chemical properties.
With this type of leather, parameters are in place for the control of physical strength, fogging, VOC emissions, heat and lightfastness, density, extensibility, odour, releasable formaldehyde, migration into plasticised pvc etc.
The test requirements are vigorous, as are the demands for the best aesthetic properties in leather&bsquo; grain tightness, fullness and roundness. These are a must in modern automotive leathers, not only in order to enhance the natural characteristics of the leather but also to promote the all important higher cutting yield and better print retention.
To meet all of these requirements, Clariant have developed a new retanning agent with optimised tanning properties.
Sandotan SCU liquid is the main component of their wet-white retanning system. It is a high quality synthetic tanning agent that will clearly improve the properties and appearance of wet-white leathers. With the use of Sandotan SCU, it is not necessary to add the usual high amount of different retanning products. Furthermore, it is possible to make the leather with or without lower quantities of Tara. With Sandotan SCU, Clariant offer an innovative product that meets today’s highest requirements for ecological leathers, while giving the tanner maximum added-value and process simplicity.
Sandotan SCU is a self tanning agent in its own right and will help to ensure a leather that has the maximum cutting area by preferentially filling out the empty areas whilst not detracting from the softness and overall good handle of the leather. Sandotan SCU helps to achieve intra and inter hide production consistency and to level out the differences in the general softness and milling pattern.
It is recommended that the Sandotan SCU liquid is added towards the beginning of the retanning process, in order to gain the maximum advantage from its very special properties.
