Killarney golf club has three courses, and this year the championship will be played on the Killeen course and Mahoney’s Point. The Killeen course is the jewel in the crown of the complex, and was originally designed in 1972. It has previously staged the Irish Open in 1991 and 1992 when Nick Faldo won back-to-back victories, and this year it has also been chosen to host the Irish Open this coming July.
Last year nearly 100 golfers from all branches of the trade attended the event at Slaley Hall in Northumberland, England. Manufacturers, retailers, agents, wholesalers and distributors from the footwear and leather industries all competed for an array of Silver Trophies for both the Regional and International Competitions, along with several Visitors competing for their own trophies. As a result a total of £14,750 ($23,748) was donated to Footwear Friends and the Leather & Hides Trade Benevolent Society.
Visitors are most welcome to compete for the Marlone trophy over 36 holes, all the championships being handicapped and played in the Stapleford format.
The Killarney venue normally attracts a very large field from the UK, Europe and Ireland, and the main social event is the informal trade dinner on the Thursday evening at the Castlerosse hotel.
Entry Forms are being sent out in January and February, and entries close in April and the draw is notified to competitors in May. For any further details or entry forms please contact Rodney Gibson, on +44 (0) 1162 434081 or rodney@leicesteruk.co.uk
