The City of Gloversville is to receive a state grant amounting to $93,750 to fund an investigation into the contamination of a former tannery site. The 4.8 acre property of the Pan American Tannery was acquired by the city through a tax foreclosure in 2000.

There are five derelict buildings on the site which are believed to be contaminated by solvents, degreasers, and other chemicals. After a clean-up operation, the city plans to redevelop the site for commercial use.

The grant will meet around 75% of the cost and is the third grant from the state enabling the city to investigate tannery sites. The first two grants amounted to $362,000.
