A full grain response

11 September 2002

I found your comment in the August edition of Leather International very interesting. Being with a tannery producing 100% full grain leather I, of course, agree with you about the big difference between full grain and corrected leather. I also think that it is a threat to the tanning industry if we are forced to produce leathers which are more and more like vinyl. If we have to compete with the vinyl producers and mimic their conditions, making the leather as uniform as possible, the vinyl producers will probably be in a better position than we are. We, in the tanning industry, must protect our unique product. Leather is a natural product with very special characteristics. I think that we all have to take responsibility for developing, producing, marketing and selling leather as it is and not try to be vinyl producers. Nalle Johansson, president Elmo Leather AB
