Agreement leads to a doubling of Consortium membership

3 April 2001

Thanks to an agreement reached on March 1, the Consortio Centropercento Italiano has doubled membership to 70. Andrea Calistri, president, told Leather that the decision by 32 Milan based leathergoods manufacturers to join the organisation reflected the groundbreaking role the association had played since formation in 1997. 'We are no longer a regional promoter of 100% Italian manufacture but a national association,' he said. 'Another important measure of our success is that we have just reached a total of 500,000 pieces sold under the scheme.' Centropercento works on a levy system, with each item being numbered and certified by an audit committee. The members agree to provide full documentation during regular inspections and this has been seen as a cost effective method of promoting the ideals of 'Made in Italy'. Support for the association has come from leading makers such as Gucci and Ferragamo and it has strong links with the Association of Vegetable Leather Tanners.
