6 February 2002

The Bata Shoe Organization (BSO) have been invited to join the Calcutta (Kolkata) Leather Complex (CLC) project being implemented by the West Bengal government at Bantala, in Calcutta city. Thomas Bata, chairman, BSO, met with West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddadeb Bhattacharjee, and the State Industry Minister, Nirupam Sen, at the end of November when the Chief Minister recognised that the 'very presence of Bata will enhance the prestige of the project'. The project, being set up primarily to relocate some 500 tanneries now operating in the city, is being implemented on a 'build, operate and transfer' (BOT) basis by M L Dalmiya Construction Company. The integrated project will have an export zone as well as manufacturing facilities for leathergoods.
