Chimont solution to 'rocks' in leather

19 December 2005

Chimotan AX is Chimont's solution to the insoluble salts which remain trapped within the fibres of the leather and which are found in many wet-blue hides. They are small crystals of calcium which are difficult to eliminate during retanning. These salts can vary greatly not only between deliveries, but between hides and also within the hide itself. Because they are practically inert they cannot chemically connect with the products used during the retanning phase and so they prevent an even distribution of the retan products from colourants to lubricants. Chimotan AX is based on strong organic acids which are capable of dissolving the 'little rocks' and, in order not to damage the structure of the hide, AX has an absorbent effect which does not damage the derma fibre even if used excessively. Because it is totally organic, it acts with the chromium salts as a mask, thus helping to optimise the distribution of the chrome itself. Other new products presented at Tanning Tech were J Line, Acrythane and Dyeup. J Line is an innovative chrome retanning product which represents a new concept: a single product for retanning but not a compound. It results in full, soft leathers with a compact grain and it is claimed that it saves money and improves quality. Acrythane is an emulsified acrylic copolymer which gives a resistance similar to that obtained through the use of polyurethanes. Acrythane allows the creation of fashion articles with the cost benefit of using an acrylic resin rather than polyurethane. It provides a medium-hard film which is not sticky and has good covering power. Leather reacts well to embossing and cutting. Dyeup is a process which allows leather to be dyed 'in the garment', together with fabric, while maintaining its characteristic softness, elasticity, lightness, resistance and, above all, without shrinkage.
