Energising Chemistry for Leather

New products for the wet-end and finishing will be shown by Bayer/Lanxess under the motto: 'Energising Chemistry for Leather'. The leather business unit of Bayer Chemicals AG, Leverkusen, will be presenting their product portfolio at Tanning Tech 2004 in Bologna in hall 34, stand D21. As part of the Bayer Group reorganisation, the leather chemicals business will shortly be transferred to the new, globally operating chemical company Lanxess. The new company, comprising most of Bayer's chemicals business and some of Bayer Material Science's business units, will be listed on the stock market under the name Lanxess by the beginning of 2005 at the latest. The activities concerned were carved out internally on July 1 this year, which means that Lanxess are already operating as a largely independent company. At the fair in Bologna, the company will be presenting a comprehensive range of speciality products for the manufacture of high-quality leathers. The focus this year will be on selected new products for both the wet-end and finishing sectors. Integrated in the display will be leathers featuring products from the company's alliance partner Rohm and Haas Corp of Philadelphia, USA. Rohm and Haas are responsible for the research, development and production of a number of speciality chemicals, which are then marketed by Lanxess. A law prohibiting the use of nonylphenol and ethoxylated nonylphenols has been passed by the European Parliament and will come into force on January 17, 2005. Lanxess have developed a highly effective, biodegradable alternative. Baymol AN 90 contains neither nonylphenol nor solvents. The range of applications is comparable to that of products containing nonylphenol. Baykanol Licker LC is based on lecithin which can be used in combination with other fatliquoring agents, also in the retannage of white and lightfast leathers. In the production of automotive leather, it is possible to add up to 3% of the product - calculated on the shaved weight - without impairing the fogging values. Lubritan MT is a softening polymer tanning material with excellent softness, fullness and resistance to heat yellowing and good water repellency. It can be used in the retannage of garment, shoe nappa and furniture upholstery leather and is also suitable for use in the production of washable leather for sports shoes. Lubritan RF, likewise a softening polymer tanning material, imparts good fullness, a tight grain, good softness and low water absorption.When used in the retannage of softy and upper leathers and in the production of washable leathers, it gives a soft, full and round handle. Tanigan CK is a new, phenol-based, synthetic tanning material particularly for use in the pretannage of vegetable leathers, ensuring a better penetration and more uniform uptake. Tanigan CK treated leathers have a light, clean colour and a fine, smooth grain. The low astringency prevents drawn grain. Tanigan CK can be used in the production of wet-white, in the retannage of chrome leather and to disperse vegetable tanning material mixtures. Hydrholac AD-1 is an aqueous, solvent-free, acrylate-based matting agent which is particularly suitable for the finishing of automotive leathers with high physical fastness properties. It is used together with suitable gloss level polymer dispersions as a matting component in final top coat formulations to adjust the desired degree of lustre. Hydrholac CL-1 is an aqueous, solvent-free acrylic dispersion similar to Hydrholac AD-1, but without the matting effect. Both products are characterised by outstanding flexibility at low temperatures, abrasion resistance and resistance to yellowing, and yet give an excellent feel. Because of their good embossing properties and compatibility with other finishing agents, both products can also be included in base coats. Primal Prebottom SVE is a very soft, fine-particle-sized, aqueous acrylic dispersion with outstanding penetration for the grain-tightening impregnation of corrected grain leathers. It is mainly used in combination with Euderm Driver DE to control the absorbency. Leathers impregnated with this product have excellent grain tightness and a pleasantly soft surface touch. New Bayderm Finish 95 UD is a hard, but highly elastic dispersion of an aliphatic polyurethane for aqueous final top coats with a lacquer-like high gloss, a smooth surface touch and good physical fastness properties. Aquaderm XL 70, a solvent-containing formulation of a reactive isocyanate, improves the physical fastness properties of aqueous finishes. It is added undiluted to ready-to-use finish formulations immediately before use. Aquaderm XL 70 is particularly suitable for glossy leathers, as it does not impair the gloss level of finishes. Aquaderm Additive SF is a surface touch modifier for aqueous finishes, especially for the finishing of automotive and furniture upholstery leather.It is used in final top coats to provide a soft and supple surface touch. The inorganic pigments Euderm colours C-N and the organic Euderm colours B-N were specially developed for aqueous leather finishes. They are casein and emulsifier-free, give good fastness to migration, good covering power and load the grain only minimally, thereby ensuring high elasticity, flex resistance, ageing stability and good wetfastness. Bayperm Adduct S and Bayperm Hardener BK are a high-solids, two-component polyurethane system for the transfer coating of splits. Application is possible by doctor blade giving coatings with a high solids content without the need for further additives and with extremely low emission levels and high physical fastness properties as well as remarkable softness.
