Export hopes pinned on Dhaka fair

25 April 2004

To expand the export market of Bangladesh leathergoods, the 6th Dhaka International Leather Fair, 2004, began in Dhaka on March 23. Manufacturers of leather products from India, Italy, Germany, South Africa, the USA, Holland, Switzerland, the UK and host country Bangladesh participated in the event. Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia inaugurated the three-day fair which was organised by the Bangladesh Finished Leather, Leathergoods and Footwear Exporters Association (BELLFEA) and the Bangladesh Tanners Association (BTA) at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel. Foreign buyers and leather industry marketing companies were invited and it was hoped that around US$7 million worth of business would be done. Rezaul Karim Ansari, chairman of BFLLFEA, said that he hoped that the fair would create a great opportunity for buyers and sellers from home and abroad to make contacts for business. Leather fashion items including footwear, bags, belts, wallets, travel kits and leather garments were displayed at 70 stalls in the fair. The BFLLFEA chairman said Bangladesh earned about $280 million in the fiscal year 2002-03 from the sector and he hoped that about $300 million would be earned in the current year. He also said that out of a total 207 tanneries, about 100-115 have already been shut down due to financial problems and that it would be in the interests of the industry to attempt to rehabilitate the sick tanneries.
