Lithuanian Povijola calls for protection

6 November 2006

The Povijola leather producer in Telsiai in Lithuania says it is trying to withstand competition from leather products made in China by offering high quality products, according to Baltic Business News. However, the company is calling on the European Union to take protective measures to help leather producers. Povijola's director and owner, Povilas Gaucys, said that the EU should start limiting imports of Chinese leathergoods as local companies in Lithuania are losing market share and may be forced out of the market. 'Leather manufacturers should unite and ask for general market protection measures. Anti-dumping duties were introduced for Chinese footwear, and the same measures should be applied to our market', said Gaucys.
