Looking for next year's holiday colours

10 March 2010

Spring and summer! It’s a time of the year when many people are looking forward to holidays. It’s a time of sunshine when fashions and colours are bright and cheerful, when there’s a tendency to a simple approach to life. A simpler way of looking at colour is behind the new look for spring and summer 2011 that Stahl’s new Design Studio consultants, Bianco and White, have used in their first presentation of a Fashion Colour Forecast

Smooth
Leave the city. Leave the stress. Escape into a concept of simplicity and health, at one with the countryside. The mood is one in which people can rediscover their roots and their ethnicities, search for the past and the future and rediscover the beauty of nature in plants and stones. Colours are in contact with the natural habitat, camouflaging against the landscape, and giving more value and modernising
existing products. They are organic with earthy gradations that eventually reach out over the horizon to the deep blue abyss beyond. This is a world of coherence and natural leathers.

Tramp
Here is a gypsy city, creating its own space within its parks or green oases. Life is alive within the houses or trailers and campers. There’s proper space both within and outside the city for a quiet, modern daily lifestyle. Dress will be showy, contrasting with the green surroundings, derived from a mix of ‘beach mood’ and ‘night glam’. Colours are strong and natural providing a mixture of delicacy and a positive vision of life.
Household and other objects of daily life will also be coloured, aimed at happiness in the home. Imagine a coloured city, a nomadic life and the city traveller.

Spotless
These are the summer shades, the combinations of soft tonal colours that are hidden from the sun. Their message is one of internal calm, a sense of peace. There are no brilliant colours, just a range of gentle colours that point to a world of comfort and soft materials. There is an essential elegance and quality of life.

Tonic
People living together create a style of life thinking about the future of the planet surrounded by playful colours, gentle and earthy yet inspired by energy and vitality. This is the style for the ecological citizen living in enormous skyscrapers with apartments, offices, stalls, supermarkets, cinemas and theatres, even jobs for the residents. The construction will follow the idea of an external garden with lawns of grass on the walls. Vivacious clashes of brilliant bright colour are accented by naïve graphics. It’s a riot of colour.

Overview of themes
The effects of light, atmosphere and environment in fashion centres across the world tend to differ from each other. Fashion shades may be brighter or more muted in one country than another. The colours shown in Stahl Fashion Colour Forecasts should, therefore, be regarded as a guide to colour rather than an exact statement. In producing them, the team works through background sources to place colours into moods in which appropriate names can be given and the colours refined further into the groups that are used in the forecasts. It’s a painstaking job but the excitement rises as the groups become apparent and defined.
