Through-feed sammying from Rizzi

14 January 2003

A prototype of Rizzi 1857's new Penta through-feed sammying machine was first featured in Leather International in May 2002, page 26. The five roller, Penta, and the three roller, Tria, versions of the machine have subsequently been officially launched on to the open market during Tanning Tech. Both versions of the machine are aimed at processors of full or sided wet-blue hides. The five rollered Penta applies a greater pressure to the hides during sammying and is ideal for those processors who ship large quantities of wet-blue or prefer a drier chrome tanned material. It is also perfect for contract tanners who wish to have a dry hide with a fast throughput. Hides may be split immediately after sammying with the Penta. The Tria model exerts less pressure and is more suited to tanners who wish to retan the leathers following sammying. As well as wet-blue hides, the Tria and Penta models have also been used to sammy lime splits. What sets Rizzi's machine apart from the others on the market is the new pvc feeding and spreading carpet. The continuous and self-centering pvc carpet provides a smoother and more effective spreading of the hides which allows a higher level of moisture removal. As a result, the manufacturer claims that an additional 2.5-3.0% extra area yield can be gained from the device on a typical wet-blue hide.
