USDA animal ID system grows

19 December 2007

The US Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has recorded 429,600 premises registered nationwide as part of the National Animal Identification System, with substantial increases this year in the number of premises registered.

Nebraska became the tenth state to register at least 50% of its total estimated production premises. The NAIS www.locatein48 website aims to trace back data within 48 hours to contain the spread of animal disease. Other states that have topped the 50% mark include Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wisconsin.
