Water shortage threatens Korangi tanners

22 October 2012

Exports from leather industry in the Korangi industrial tanning cluster have been seriously threatened due to suspension of water supplies to the tannery zone of Korangi, according to the Pakistan Tanners Association - South Zone (PTA).

Chairman Pakistan Tanners Association (S.Z), Amanullah Aftab has expressed concern that the largest national cluster of exporting leather and leather products units, is being starved of water due to the suspension of water supply via a pipeline or by tankers in the peak processing season for the tanneries which has already begun. During Eidul Azha, the largest number of hides and skins would be brought to this zone by the charity organisations and the tanneries would require water in abundance but are being threatened to default onshipments of leather to customers abroad on stipulated delivery dates since they will not be ready in time for want of water, he said, adding that the workers may also gradually lose jobs due to closure of units and lower production in the absence of water. Aftab is to ask the Sindh Governor, to order the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board to make some arrangements of water supply for the tanneries whether it is through a pipeline or tankers.
