31 May 2013

The congress is organised by the Turkish Leather Technologists Association, Detek under the leadership of IULTCS President, Dr Volkan Candar. Dr Candar will hand over the Presidency to Dr Patricia Casey from Argentina for the next congress in Brazil at the end of 32nd conference on May 31.

The prestigous IULTCS merit award was jointly presented to Dr Eleanor Brown of the Eastern Regional Research Center in the US and Prof. Dr G Reich, former Director of the German technical institute, FILK. The IULTCS Merit Award is a recognition of an outstanding contribution to leather science and research. The award is presented by the IULTCS Executive Committee.

The IULTCS technical programme was broken down into three technical presentation sessions each day as well as a poster session each day shown during the coffee breaks. During first session on May 29 the Heidemann lecture was delivered by Dr Michael Meyer from the German technical institute, FILK. A whole range of presentations were given covering the whole leathermaking process with a strong presence of papers looking at the environmental issues facing the industry and the re-use of byproducts from leathermaking.

The three-day congress took place at the Sheraton Maslak hotel in Istanbul and also featured a boat trip for all delegates along the Bosphorus and a gala dinner at the ornate Adile Sultan Palace on the banks of the Bosphorus. Both events acted as important networking events for the leather scientific community from around the world.

The 33rd IULTCS congress is due to take place in November 2015 in Novo Hamburgo, Brazil.
