ILSA Brasil has already converted tannery waste into 300000 tons of fertilizers

24 May 2021

The ILSA Brasil company assures that in May it will reach the production of 300,000 tons of leather waste transformed into fertilizers, from the beginning of its operations in that country in 2009. The technology it uses allows to transform this waste into a new product of great importance for the environment, food and society.

This result shows the trajectory of growth in sustainability and insertion in the circular economy of the tannery sector, having as a partner a company that offers viable and positive solutions to environmental problems. A very consistent example of how technology, innovation and best practices make the leather production and consumption cycle a sustainable and transparent chain.

The work of the ILSA company consists of transforming wet-blue leather waste into fertilizers through a thermal hydrolysis process (which only ILSA is capable of carrying out in Latin America on an industrial scale), which transforms it into a kind of gelatin rich in organic nutrients and carbon. After a drying process, the fertilizer material is obtained.

The 300,000 tons of residues that were transformed into fertilizer are enough to fertilize around 500 thousand hectares of crops. As a result, it was possible to benefit farmers and consumers in Brazil, Latin America and Europe, where ILSA markets its products for all types of crops (pastures, cereals, vegetables and fruit trees).

ILSA is an Italian company that began its activity in 1956 and arrived in Brazil 12 years ago. The company currently does business in 51 countries.
