Raw Skin Smuggling Key Challenge to Kenyan Leather

The smuggling of skins and hides to other countries remains the biggest challenge for Kenya’s tanneries, with leather processors calling on the government to intensify its efforts to combat the illicit trade which is estimated to cost the country £1.5 billion a year.

Despite the government increasing the export levy on raw hides and skins from 40% to 80%, smuggling still remains a huge impediment.
