Among those involved in the initiative are CBD and local subsidiaries of Wal-Mart Stores and Carrefour.
The decision followed a report by environmental group Greenpeace claiming the beef industry is the largest contributor to Amazon deforestation (see earlier reports on this website and LWG statement). The report prompted the state prosecutors office to ask retail groups, among others, to stop buying cattle-related products from deforested areas.
‘The retail sector, through Abras, will not proceed with the denounced actions and will react actively,’ Abras said in a statement.
The association said CBD, Wal-Mart and Carrefour will ban beef bought from farms that have been accused of deforestation and will require transportation records from slaughterhouses. Independent audits also are part of the effort.
