Members of various trade unions attached to leather tanneries in Tamil Nadu, India, have announced an indefinite strike from the end of July. Among a number of demands, they are seeking a wage hike and bonus benefits.
The decision was taken at a meeting attended by various representative bodies, including the All India Trade Union Congress, the Indian National Trade Union Congress and Anna Tholir Sanga Peravai, and chaired by the district president of Centre of Indian Trade Unions, M P Ramachandran.
According to Ramachandran, despite more than ten separate rounds of talks with the labour department in Chennai, tannery owners continued to refuse to compromise.
"The trade unions have decided to go on indefinite strike from July 30 to press our demands," he said.
